Let’s be honest ladies, we all experience fear in some shape or form in our lives. Unfortunately, we are not immune to fear, and if we are not careful it can paralyze us. Fear can stop us from living and being the women of God the Lord calls us to be. The Lord does not want us to live fearful lives.

Yes, having the Fear of the Lord is important, but fearing everything else is where the problem lies. It is a good thing to fear the Lord. That means that we have a reverence for God. It means that we respect Him, and we are in awe of Him. When we start to fear other things to a point where it overcome us, that is when we must take our authority in Christ and regain control over our lives. What is the answer to overcoming fear? The answer is complete trust in God our Father.

Here are three ways to trust in God and to overcome fear:

  1.  Read and Study the Word!

So as I mentioned, the answer to overcoming fear is a complete trust in the Lord. But how can we trust in God if we do not know Him? How can we fight against the spirit of fear if we do not know what the word says about it? Sometimes we let fear overtake us because we do not know who God is, or we forget what the word says about God and his character. That is why it is so important to read and internalize the Word.

During your study time, you will grow a more in depth understanding of who God is, and you can hide the word in your heart. So, when you feel fear sneaking upon you, you can combat it with the word of God.

2 Timothy 1:7 “For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.”

This scripture comforts us to know that God does not give us a spirit of fear. But He gives us power, love, and self-control. How encouraging is this?

There are many ways you can study the word of God. Joining a bible study at church is a great idea. Some communities have a One-year bible reading plan. Others read wherever they feel the Holy Spirit is leading them to read. While others just read the New or Old Testament throughout the whole year etc.

The point is to begin reading and studying the word of God. If you have a busy schedule, it may be good to plan certain days of the week where you commit to studying the bible. It is also crucial to read daily and to meditate on scripture. I commit to Sundays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays. I also commit daily to meditating on scripture and reading a 365-day devotional book. Find a schedule that best suits your personal walk with the Lord, just make it a priority to consistently study the Word of God.

Fear can no longer have complete control over you. It can no longer overcome us. Because we know the one that has overcome the world, so we can overcome it as well!

2. Pray to God

We need to understand the need to pray. It is crucial when we are dealing with overcoming the spirit of fear. We do not wrestle with flesh and blood but with spiritual forces of darkness. So, we cannot use physical means to overcome fear; It is only through the spiritual weapons and tools the Lord has given us that we will prevail over fear. Prayer is a big part of this. Prayer will help you connect with God and can allow room for the Holy Spirit to work in your life. Praying is a form of turning to God and trusting in Him.

One day, I was feeling anxious, I began having a panic attack. Fear was coming over my body, and I did not know what to do. I went inside my car, opened my bible, and I started praying out the whole chapter of Psalm 23. And at that moment, I just felt the fear slowly disappear. I believe that the spirit of fear was trying to overtake me.

I did not know what to do, but I knew where to go! For me to experience the power of God in this way was so liberating for me, and it can be for you too!

Psalm 23:4 Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

Here in Psalm 23, we see David talking and praying to the Lord. Even though David is facing the valley, he says that he will fear no evil. Because he knows that God is with him, he knows that God will comfort him. Here we can see that David is walking out his trust in God. We can see his faith in God even though he may be afraid. God’s presence will give us hope and strength through any dark valley.

You can pray out scriptures as well whenever you are feeling fearful. Also, pray against that spirit or whatever limiting beliefs you are meditating on. Get to the root of what is causing you to fear. It is also good to pray that the Lord will give you the strength to overcome it.

Trust and believe that you are a new creation, and you do not have to live in fear.

3. Praise and Worship God

At times the uncertainty of my future makes me fearful. But when I stop focusing on all my anxious thoughts and turn on some worship music; All the fear disappears, and my focus changes. I focus on God and worshiping Him, His nature, who He is. It is so freeing and so powerful when we worship.

We do not have time to be afraid when we are standing in the presence of God; His peaceful and joyful presence. This is another way of showing that we trust God is in control of our lives.

Isaiah 41:10 fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God;

I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.

I love this verse because it is a good reminder for us to be brave! After all, God is with us. He promises that He is going to strengthen us. He says that He will help us. And so we can freely ask God for help during moments when we are experiencing fear and put our hope and confidence in Him that he will set us free from fear.

He is our God, He loves us, and God wants to walk with us on our journey. He is such a good God! That is why we need not fear, and that is why trusting in God is how we overcome fear.
